Meditation has been practiced for thousands of years, and may still evoke images of Buddhist monks sitting at the top of a mountain. Here in the West, meditation is often referred to as ‘mindfulness’, which simply means awareness of the present moment, and can in fact be practiced anytime, anywhere.
Meditation/mindfulness has been found to alleviate stress and anxiety, improve concentration, increase self-awareness, and encourage clarity of thought leading to creative problem solving. As Deepak Chopra states “When you begin to meditate on a regular basis, you will start to notice that thoughts and feelings that may have been building up inside of you are gently released and you reach the quiet place that is there waiting for you, the place of pure awareness – it is there that you will experience peace, healing and true rejuvenation.”
As the pace of life continues to speed up, more and more people are discovering the benefits of incorporating these periods of ‘stillness’ into their life. Yet so many people struggle to ‘switch off’ from future worries or past ruminations, constantly feeling under pressure to be ‘doing’ - planning, achieving and ‘overthinking’.
For those who have tried to meditate alone without success, it can be helpful, at least initially, to participate in a guided meditation. I offer friendly group sessions of guided visualisation meditation each month.
Each session will last approximately one hour, during which I offer guided visualisation, plus discussion of various methods of meditation and mindfulness - techniques, hints and tips for practice.
It is important to wear loose, comfortable clothing. Chairs will be provided (or you may bring your own mat). You are welcome to stay for a little refreshment and chat after the session.
